If your brand is on Instagram, chances are you’ve put a lot of time, and maybe even money, into creating this visual representation of your product or services. Your feed might even look polished and stylish at this point—but you’re not getting followers. There’s probably a few reasons why you’re not getting quite as many likes and follows as you thought you would by now—one Instagram mistake being, underutilizing hashtags. There are plenty of social media rules you can break, but this isn’t one of them. There are few brands, especially small businesses, that can organically grow their Instagram accounts from 0, without using hashtags to start.
I often tell people who want to grow this channel that they need to use hashtags. It’s very simple. People search on Instagram using tags (hashtags or geo tags—but that’s for another day). So if you’ve ever seen your friends adding 30 hashtags to each post, it’s because they want to be found, as unsightly as it looks at times. But with every phrase, word, letter, and emoji having the potential to become a hashtag, you want to make sure you’re utilizing the most effective ones—think of them as social media search terms really—otherwise you’re wasting your time.
A note on ineffective hashtags: If you’re promoting a business and you hashtag the word business in a post, you’re adding a photo to a scroll of 8.6 million. So good luck having people find you. Finding hashtags that will benefit you is a process, but this will get you started. So if you’re not sure how to start using hashtags, or you’r or you’ve realized that your hashtag game is totally off (ie you add 20 hashtags in a comment to every photo you post but only get 5 likes)—you need this list! Only add the ones that are relevant, of course. If you tag something #socialmedia and you’re talking about ice cream, you’re doing it wrong. Enjoy!
